ABC News Blogs 8-Year-Old Gets 'Catastrophe Award' for Most Homework Excuses

(ABC)
The mother of an 8-year-old Arizona girl who was presented with a "Catastrophe Award" for apparently having the most excuses for not having homework believes her child was humiliated by her teacher.
Christina Valdez said her daughter, Cassandra Garcia, came home one day from class at Desert Springs Academy in Tucson, Ariz., with the paper award.
The document, which looks like a colorful card, contained the following message: "You're Tops! Catastrophe Award.  Awarded to Cassandra Garcia. For Most Excuses for Not Having Homework."
The teacher signed the card "Ms. Plowman," added the date - May 18, 2012 - and even included a smiley face.
The teacher announced the award in front of the entire class, and the other students laughed at her daughter, Valdez said in a Thursday interview with ABC TV affiliate KGUN-TV in Tucson.
When she contacted the school to complain, the principal "blew me off," Valdez added. "She said it was a joke that was played and that the teachers joke around with the children."
But Valdez told KGUN that she didn't find any of it funny.
"I think it's cruel and no child should be given an award like this. It's disturbing," she said, adding that she was not aware her daughter had a problem with homework, and that the girl had been enrolled in an after-school homework assistance program.
Desert Springs Academy's principal declined to comment to a KGUN reporter, the affiliate reported.

Charles Taylor sentenced to 50 years in Prison

Liberia’s Charles Taylor sentenced to 50 years for Sierra Leone war crimes

A UN-backed war crimes court has sentenced former Liberian president Charles Taylor to 50 years in prison Wednesday for arming Sierra Leone rebels in return for “blood diamonds”.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone found Mr. Taylor guilty last month on 11 charges of aiding and abetting the rebels who went on a bloody rampage—murdering and mutilating thousands—during the decadelong civil war that ended in 2002 with more than 50,000 dead.
“The trial chamber unanimously sentences you to a single term of imprisonment for 50 years on all counts,” said Special Court for Sierra Leone judge Richard Lussick at the court based just outside The Hague.

Nigerian appointed as the first black police commander in London

Mr. Victor Olisa, a UK-based Nigerian and a Chief Superintendent with the London Metropolitan Police has been appointed as the first black commander for Bexley local council in London.

“Policing runs in the family and I have always wanted to be a police officer and ethnicity does not affect that,” Olisa told the Europe Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in his reaction on the appointment in London.

Olisa, whose grandfather was a police officer in Nigeria, said his focus was on the job rather than on being the “first black’’ adding that his ethnicity never affected the way he carried out his duties.

“I consider myself first and foremost a police officer. If (being black) is an advantage, then brilliant; If it’s a disadvantage, I will have to deal with that, I can’t hide it.”

Olisa said a lot was being done to address racism within the force, adding that it was the responsibility of the force to correct wrongs and not an institution for people with racist views.
“I am impeccably against anyone who uses racist language or behaves in a racist manner. This will not be allowed under my watch.

“I believe that everyone should be treated with dignity wherever they come from,’’ Olisa said.
Olisa, 52, born in Warri, Delta, is one of the three chief superintendents from black minority ethnic background working for the Metropolitan Police.

He started his career in Surrey Police in 1982 before transferring to the City of London Police in 1990 as detective inspector in the Fraud Squad.

After a spell at the Home Office, he transferred to the Metropolitan police in 2006 as a superintendent in Southwark Council before his recent appointment.

When Beyonce hit the stage in Atlantic City for her Revel concert this weekend, everyone knew she would leave no stone unturned in her comeback after giving birth to Blue Ivy.

However, It wasn’t only her singing and dancing that blew the crowd away, Queen Bey also set the bar high in the fashion stakes and wowed her audience in an array of dazzling gowns.
According to People magazine, a team of 20 couturiers worked around the clock to complete Bey’s looks, which contained more than 500,000 crystals.

“The inspiration for the sexy concert looks were “modern showgirl." Beyonce wanted us to be really creative and create fun and edgy designs that had an ultra-glamorous feel to them,” Ralph & Russo, who designed her concert wardrobe, revealed to the magazine.

LIKE NIGERIA...LIKE UKRAINE..SO IT HAPPEN EVERY WHERE!!!

A fight erupted in the Ukrainian Parliament on Thursday after a heated debate over proposed legislation that would make Russian the second-official language in parts of the country where Russian is the dominate language.

The fight pitted supporters of the pro-Western opposition against current President Viktor Yanukovych's party. The pro-Western opposition wants to see Ukraine rise and become independent of Russian influences, while the pro-Yanukovych group has wide support in the Russian speaking east.
"You're a corpse, you have two days left to live, we will crucify you on a birch tree," said Vadim Kolesnichenko, who stated members of the opposition threatened him, the Unian news service reported.

There was one report of a member of parliament who backed the opposition, Mykola Petruk, who was hit on the head and was taken to a local hospital.
Lawmakers have often fought during sessions of the Ukrainian parliament. In December 2010, a fight broke out which resulted in six legislators being taken to the hospital.
That fight started after members of Yanukovych's party threw chairs and assaulted opposing lawmakers when they grew tired. They felt those members had been stalling legislative work that day.
Hmmm, guess it's not only in Nigeria things like these happen...
